Lights, Camera, Archive

Join us as we lift the curtain on the work of the NFSA and its collection.

Promo for Lights, Camera, Archive, NFSA digital excursion, 2025.

We take students behind the scenes to follow how media is collected, preserved and shared at Australia’s national audiovisual (AV) archive. Along the way, students will discover the collection and meet the passionate people whose diverse careers are integral to the NFSA. Students will be asked to think critically about Australia’s past, the role of AV media in shaping national identity, and the power of storytelling.

With dynamic visuals, surprising insights and engaging stories, this excursion is suitable for a broad audience and supports several learning areas across the Australian Curriculum.

TV: Then and Now

Travel back to 1956, when television first arrived in Australia.

Promo for TV: Then and Now, NFSA digital excursion, 2025.

In this 30-minute interactive digital excursion, students will explore how watching TV in the past compares to today. They will investigate how television technology and viewing habits have changed over time, take part in drawing and discussion activities, and imagine life as a child growing up in the early days of Australian TV.

Through this experience, students will consider the following key inquiry questions:

  • What was different about TV and how people consumed TV shows in the past?

  • How has TV as a medium changed since its arrival in Australia in 1956?
