This collection celebrates the women who played an important professional role during Australia’s early years of radio broadcasting and became pioneers in media production techniques.
They gained prominence as producers, directors, writers and performers at a time when most women were encouraged to stay at home as housewives and mothers.
Many of these women’s stories in radio can be told through items in the NFSA collection, including radio recordings, photographs, scrapbooks, scripts, books, magazines and oral histories.
Notably, this collection includes several episodes of radio dramas made by Grace Gibson Productions.
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia acknowledges Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live and gives respect to their Elders both past and present.
