
Australian radio in the 1970s and 80s, much like other sectors of media, was dominated by men. As well as men filling the majority of on-air announcer and management roles, the music that was played on radio was predominantly male.
In this clip, announcer Fiona McLeod interviews Julie Goodall about women’s participation in the station. Most of the voices broadcast on their station are male, and they also discuss sexist stereotypes of women in music and their efforts to replace gendered language on air.
While there have been improvements over the ensuing decades, listening to this clip makes one realise that in some areas, very little has changed.
