Two curators at the NFSA adjust the belt on a costume on a mannequin. One of the curators is a young woman who is laughing while she works, and both are wearing blue gloves.

NFSA Careers FAQs

NFSA Careers Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some commonly asked questions about applying for a job at the National Film and Sound Archive.

Can I apply for more than one job at a time?

Yes, you can. You’ll need to submit a separate application for each role.

How long does the recruitment process take?

Usually between four to eight weeks, depending on the role. We do our best to move through the process as quickly as possible and to keep applicants informed at each stage.

What does the NFSA recruitment process involve?

We’re an Australian Public Service (APS) employer governed by the Public Service Act 1999, which means we recruit based on merit. Generally, we ask candidates to submit an application or a one-page pitch based on the role’s selection criteria.

Candidates who progress to the next stage will be invited to attend an interview, and we’ll check their references. For some positions, applicants will be asked to complete a role-specific task as part of the recruitment process.

Who can I use as a reference?

If you progress to the reference check stage, you’ll be asked to submit at least two professional references. Ideally, your referees will be your most recent direct manager and someone else who has supervised you in the last five years.

However, we understand it’s not always possible to provide a reference from your current employer. If this is your situation, please talk to our Recruitment team about the other options available.

Personal references will not be accepted.

I’ve applied for a job at the NFSA. When will I hear back?

We’ll be in touch as soon as possible once the role has closed. We aim to contact both successful and unsuccessful candidates promptly.
