David Helfgott (Geoffrey Rush) has returned to Perth a broken man, after his collapse on stage at the Royal College of Music.

David’s music teacher Mr Rosen (Nicholas Bell) pleads with Mr Helfgott (Armin Mueller-Stahl) to let David take up an offer of a music scholarship in America.

David (Noah Taylor) is now a star student at the Royal College of Music in London, and one of the candidates for the Concerto Medal.
