Preliminary editing done on relatively low-cost editing systems, usually to provide an EDL (edit decision list) for final on-line editing and assembly of the finished show.
Off-line editing is a decision making process using low cost equipment usually to produce an EDL or a rough cut that can be checked or referred to in a high quality on-line suite — saving decision making time in the more expensive environment.
