
Substance used to hold halide particles in suspension, in order to construct an emulsion. This is deposited on a base. It is the image carrying emulsion binder, an organic compound discovered in 1871. Because of its stability gelatin has remained unrivaled for photographic purposes – despite intensive scientific research into alternative materials.
