November at Arc Cinema

Arc Cinema Program at NFSA for November 2022

Canberra Screenings and Events
 James Dyer

On 18 November we have a special screening of Baz Luhrmann’s dazzling rock’n’roll biopic ELVIS (2022)! Baz’s latest global smash tells the story of Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) through the prism of his complicated relationship with enigmatic manager Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). Tickets will include access to our recently updated Australians & Hollywood exhibition, a talk from an NFSA curator about the ELVIS items on display and, before the screening, the audience will be treated to a performance by rock’n’roll singer Jerikye Williams! We encourage dressing up on the night. So you bring the glamour, we’ll bring the show, tickets have a limit so go, cat, go!

From the glamour to the gang who shook a nation: on 26 November we have a special screening of True History of the Kelly Gang (2019), presented in partnership with Canberra Museum+Gallery, and followed by a Q&A with director Justin Kurzel (via Zoom) and photographer Matthew Thorne. Inspired by Peter Carey’s Man Booker prize-winning novel of the same name, True History of the Kelly Gang is an epic, fictionalised retelling of the life of legendary Australian bushranger Ned Kelly. Tickets also include free entry to our newly updated Australians & Hollywood exhibition, which features items from the film, and a talk from one of our curators.

On 20 November we have a screening of We Are Still Here (2022), an unparalleled First Nations celebration and a powerful statement of resistance and survival. In a sweeping tale that spans 1,000 years, from the distant past to a dystopian future, this landmark collection of stories traces the histories of Indigenous peoples across Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Reserve your tickets and join us for some movie magic.

This month our Arc Out Loud event is simply ‘scent-sational’! Join us on 25 November for John Waters’ Polyester: Scratch ‘n’ Sniff (1981), a Divine tribute to the Hollywood ‘woman’s picture’. In homage to the film originally being released in 'Odorama', we’ve created our own special scratch ‘n’ sniff cards. Mark them off during the screening and you can join in the olfactory fun of this unique cinema experience!

There’s so much more to discover on the big screen in Arc this month! You’ll find the full line-up below.

Please help us keep everyone safe by reading and following our COVID-safety and visitor information and don’t forget to get your Club NFSA card when you arrive.
