Dir: Terrence Malick, M, United States, 1998, 170mins, 35mm,

Terrence Malick captures both the staggering scale of war and the intimacy of individual stories in this fictionalisation of the Guadalcanal Campaign during the Second World War. Critics praised this philosophical exploration of the effects of war, adapted from James Jones’ autobiographical novel and enriched by a powerful yet tender Hans Zimmer score.

The film’s climax is heightened by Hans Zimmer’s ’Journey to the Line’: an influential composition that has become ubiquitous across film, television and games. Jesse Kino-Goodin (CBC Radio) describes it as ‘a universally emotional piece of music that, in its simplicity, hits you in the very place you need it to hit.’

The Thin Red Line was shot on location in Queensland, Australia and in the Solomon Islands. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture.

‘It wrestles with complexity, speaks to us in poetry, weaves multiple narrative strands into a tapestry, opens the festering wounds of war and gazes inside without blinking’ –

Presented on 35mm film prints from the NFSA collection.

Available as a triple film pass with Dunkirk (2017) and Pearl Harbor (2001).
