A bilingual comedy web series about Lillian (Jenny Zhou), a young Mandarin interpreter reluctantly caught in a tussle of words and cultures during the most unexpected assignments.
Lillian is called to an interpreting job at a community garden where a Chinese grandmother-to-be's feng shui is at odds with council by-laws.
Bamboo Ceiling establishes the intent of the series, showing that language is only one aspect of interpretation. Allowing all three characters to speak, the viewer can see the differing points of view, as well as attempts by the interpreter to negotiate common ground.
The series is inspired by writer-director Grace Feng Fang Juan's experience as a professional interpreter in Melbourne and sheds light on the important, albeit often awkward, role of facilitating communication within migrant communities in Australia on a day-to-day basis.
