Pauline Frederick, a world famous actress from the stage and screen, poses for the camera showing off her new sophisticated bob haircut. She wears a cloche hat and a fox stole. Summary by Elizabeth Taggart-Speers.
Pauline Frederick was a well-known stage actor and later popular Hollywood film star. She was one of the first to feature in talkies films (feature films with sound) and specialised in strong and assertive female roles that were often considered controversial.
Newsreels were an integral part of cinema programming in Australia before the advent of television in 1956. Issued on a weekly basis, the newsreels enabled people to further engage with local and national political stories and events.
In this newsreel, we see Pauline Frederick posing for the camera. It is an early example of the phenomenon of celebrity and the fascination Australians have had with American film actors.
