In 1987, Aussie families met the unforgettable Gobbledok, a quirky alien on a mission to find the irresistible Smith’s potato chips. His cry of 'Chippie, chippie, chippies!', as he dashed back to Planet Dok, arms full of his favourite snack, quickly became iconic. This fun advertising character was so popular that it transcended TV spots and made a wider cultural mark. Gobbledok merchandise appeared, like this badge from 1990, which allowed fans to boast 'I Met the Gobbledok'. Pint-sized lovable aliens were definitely in the cultural zeitgeist in 1988, with Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial enjoying a blockbuster release on home video.
