Lavishly decorated with designer papers from the 1800s and a bouquet of painted flowers, this ordinary box was converted into a stereoscopic device by English box-maker George E Johns, who installed lenses with eyepieces. Placing a piece of card between two photographs creates the illusion of seeing a three-dimensional image.
