If you look closely, you can see the 3AK name on this desk microphone from 1965. This mic would have been used in the studio, making it a small but important piece of radio history.
Radio 3AK Melbourne hit the airwaves in 1931. Initially, the station operated under a restricted licence that only allowed it to broadcast at night, while other Melbourne commercial stations were off air. Until the 1950s, its slogan was ‘3AK – the voice of the night’. After obtaining a full 24-hour licence in 1954, 3AK changed its tune and shifted formats to Top 40 music in the mid-'60s.
