
Johnny O’Keefe (1935–1978) was Australia’s first homegrown rock star. If you had joined the JOK fan club, along with this handsome badge, you would have received a certificate stating, ‘I am proud to be a friend of Johnny and I will always try to help him as much as I can and try to set a good example to all teenagers’. Sweet – admirable, even – but a vision of rock’n’roll set for destruction amidst the social turmoil of the 1960s that was just around the corner.
