Acropolis Now promotional coffee cup and saucer

This cup, saucer and plate were made in 1990 to promote Acropolis Now (1989–92). The Australian sitcom marked a major step forward in terms of representation of Australian cultural diversity on television. The items are branded with the logo of the show, the television network (Seven) and the production company (Crawford Productions), and are a great example of the creative ways marketing teams publicise a series. 

Acropolis Now was filmed in front of a live studio audience, and it was created by and starred Nick Giannopoulos, George Kapiniaris and Simon Palomares, who first found success with the comedic stage show Wogs Out of Work. The series follows the antics of immature cafe owner Jim Stefanidis (Giannopoulos), his waitstaff, and his big-haired cousin Effie (Mary Coustas). The show's humour arises from the clash of cultures and beliefs. The main characters call Anglo-Celtic Aussies ‘skips’ in reference to the TV show Skippy the Bush Kangaroo.
