Based on Colin Thiele's beloved novel, Storm Boy tells the story of 10-year-old Mike 'Storm Boy' King (Greg Rowe), who lives with his reclusive father Hide-Away Tom (Peter Cummins) in the remote Coorong wetlands. Lonely and curious, Mike soon forms a bond with Aboriginal man Fingerbone Bill (David Gulpilil). Together, they care for an orphaned pelican named Mr Percival.
In this clip from the NFSA Restores version, which premiered at the 2015 Adelaide International Film Festival, Fingerbone Bill gifts Storm Boy a book, a simple gesture that reflects the depth of their connection. The narrative of Storm Boy reaches beyond friendship, exploring themes of land rights, wildlife preservation and environmental stewardship that continue to resonate strongly today.
Shot on location in South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula and Coorong, the film was made on a budget of $260,000 and became a box-office success, reaching audiences in over 100 countries.
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia acknowledges Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live and gives respect to their Elders both past and present.
