In 1949, junior social studies students were watching A Loaf of Bread, a short documentary from our Film Australia Collection that demystified the art of breadmaking. In this clip, a factory worker submerges his arms up to his elbows in dough to prepare it for baking.
The film covers every step from a loaf's humble start as flour to its final delivery. Broadcaster Wilfrid Thomas delivers a matter-of-fact narration of wheat harvesting, flour milling and bread-making processes, explaining the technical procedures in a fashion that younger audiences would understand.
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia acknowledges Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live and gives respect to their Elders both past and present.
