Jim Powe shot this candid silent black-and-white 16mm film footage on a Rail Transport Museum tour train to Brisbane hauled by 3801 as far as Taree. We see local children admiring 3801 before its departure from Taree in October 1963. Rail fan passengers file into the dining car carrying a variety of photographic and movie-taking equipment, giving us a fascinating glimpse of the people behind the cameras and the technology they were using.

We see the results of several ‘photo runs’ as 3801 performs for the cameras – crossing a bridge toward a waiting photo line and dramatically exiting a tunnel towards the camera operator. The clip gives a valuable look at the ‘photo stops’ available on rail tours 60 years ago that are no longer offered today because of safety concerns.
