'At the third stroke, it will be 10:28 precisely.'

This short documentary, made by the Postmaster-General's Department Film Unit, marks the transition from live to automatic announcements of the time in November 1954.

It explains the workings of the new 'robot equipment' that enables announcing a time signal every 10 seconds, also replacing the need for telephonists to give time information manually.

The new automated Speaking Clock is capable of handling 600 callers simultaneously.
