In this clip from the program 4MMM FM – One Year On, a station executive highlights one of the main issues facing 4MMM when beginning their FM broadcasts in Brisbane in 1980.
Five years previously, the first station to broadcast on the FM band in Brisbane was the community station 4ZZZ. In that time, they had built up a distinct sound and popular following and dominated local FM radio.
With a recognisable community activist bent and a focus on Australian alternative music, the 4ZZZ brand was almost synonymous with FM radio. Coming in as a new commercial station, 4MMM needed to find and offer a distinct point of difference.
