Beyond The Bars is one of the most unique radio shows to be broadcast in Australia.
During every NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) Week since 2002, Melbourne-based community station 3CR has presented a live broadcast at a Victorian prison. These shows feature music, poetry and discussions from a broad range of prisoners.
The shows have been made available on compact disc throughout the years and this clip is from the 2007 CD. It features a heartfelt poem written and read by an inmate, Tubsy. Although he acknowledges they find themselves in prison, there is also a positive message to be felt with the possible rebirth of the inmates.
This is an example of community radio directly communicating to and within a maligned community.
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia acknowledges Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live and gives respect to their Elders both past and present.
