Media Release: Robin Fox’s Constellations to launch at the NFSA for Enlighten Festival

The National Film and Sound Archive presents a free, immersive audiovisual experience from February 27, where sound, light, and space collide, offering a unique opportunity to experience Enlighten: Beyond both during the day and at night.

In partnership with the Enlighten Festival, the NFSA presents Constellations (Feb 27-May 4): an exhibition unifying the relationship between sound, light and space. It brings together striking visual and unique audio; laser beams pulsing with energy and harmonising with the very electricity that powers them.

Created by award-winning audiovisual artist Robin Fox, Constellations transforms the Gallery at the NFSA, using a grid of 60 small crystal balls suspended from the ceiling. Fox describes the work as a ‘...ridiculous splendour of sound and light,’ encapsulating the immersive, other-worldly experience in which light becomes sound, and sound becomes light.  Invisible in the darkness, the crystal balls become target points for white laser light that explodes and refracts on impact – splitting into a colourful cornucopia of light and sound.

‘Constellations is designed to bypass your critical faculty, so you can experience a sense of childlike wonder. That’s the feeling I had when I first experimented with this idea and that’s the feeling I want to share,’ Fox adds.

Robin Fox is an internationally recognised, Australian-based audiovisual artist, working across live performance, exhibitions, public art, and composition for contemporary dance.  His most recent accomplishments include his critically acclaimed work Triptych, which premiered at Unsound Krakow in late 2022 and has toured extensively around the world. It was awarded the Isao Tomita Special Prize at Ars Electronica Festival in 2023.

‘Constellations’ mind-bending intersections of light and sound will captivate audiences and leave them hovering between the worlds of the known and the unknown,’ said Chris Mercer, the NFSA’s Chief Experience Officer. ‘It is a thrill to welcome an artist of Robin Fox’s international acclaim to the NFSA for Enlighten Beyond, and to extend this extraordinary audiovisual experience for audiences until May.’

Constellations presents a unique, free daytime opportunity as part of the Enlighten: Beyond program. Enlighten: Beyond takes the sense of excitement and discovery of the Enlighten Festival in the National Triangle and entices audiences to explore the wealth of experiences on offer all over Canberra during the Festival period.
