Stop-motion animated series The Koala Brothers was released during the peak of video game tie-ins in the 2000s. In this Y2K era, media enjoyed by children was regularly primed to go multi-platform. This video previews Game Boy Advance tie-in The Koala Brothers: Outback Adventures, produced in Denmark and released in 2006.

Consisting of 10 mini-games that allowed young players to engage with the show’s central themes of kindness, community and caring for friends, no reading skills were required to play. In the game shown here, players can live out the piloting adventures of the titular brothers, Frank and Buster, with a simple gameplay format ideal for its target audience, which includes children as young as two. The sweep of the Australian desert and the cozy regional town where the brothers live is captured by the simple but vivid digital graphics.

The Koala Brothers aired from 2003 to 2007, depicting native Australian animals in the outback and focusing on gentle, age-appropriate storytelling. This Game Boy Advance title represents both a nostalgic tie-in to early 2000s children’s media and the extension of the show’s values into interactive play.
