Oral history interview with oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros AM

2024

Joseph Tawadros AM (born 1983) is an Egyptian-born Coptic Australian multi-instrumentalist and oud virtuoso. Tawadros has won the ARIA Award for Best World Music Album seven times: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. In this 4+ hour interview for the NFSA with Rod Freeman, Tawadros discusses his life and career to date. In this clip, Tawadross discusses his '24hr Prayer for Humanity' world record breaking Oud Solo in the College Chapel at the Strand in London. In promoting the event he described his reason as follows: "I want to create a safe space for people from all religions and backgrounds to come together, light a candle and pray for those who need it most. Every life lost is equal, no matter what background, race, religion or creed and we must come together, show our compassion and send love to those that are suffering. We must not underestimate the power of prayer and togetherness, and even though many of us may feel helpless, we just cannot give up...let us sit side by side, close our eyes and send out a beautiful energy that can be felt all around the world".
