This excerpt is of the Andalus Arabic Choir performing ‘Abu Qdila’ during their concert in the Great Hall of Sydney University in 2012. Mixed and mastered by Dr Noel Elmowy, the audio presents a glimpse into musical and cultural fusion across geography and time.

The layered influences reflect the group's focus on the region of 'Andalus' ('Andalusia' in Spanish). Between 711 and 1492 AD, Andalusian Spain saw the rise of courtly 'Andalusian music' – developed through Western, Eastern and Berber convergences, as well as Christian, Muslim and Jewish traditions. Folk, traditional and pop music blend in the clip, harking back to the melting pot of the Andalus. Reflecting the choir's focus on Arabic and Andalusian songs in various dialects from Andalusia to the Middle East and North Africa, the music evokes the power of both the old and the new.

The Andalus Arabic Choir is a multicultural Australian organisation formed to promote Arabic heritage, art, music and culture. Based in Sydney, the choir features singers of both Arabic and non-Arabic backgrounds; non-Arabic singers receive a transliterated copy of the lyrics.
