This little toy projector takes only 100-foot reels of 35mm film, but what's surprising is how dangerous it was. When it was made, 35mm film stock was madr from highly flammable nitrate. While prized for its luminous tones, nitrate was eventually banned owing to the risks involved in screening and storing it. It's strange now to imagine something so flammable being included in a children's toy.

The NFSA preserves an important collection of nitrate film in a specially built facility. By digitising this collection, we can provide future generations with safe and easy access to the stories and memories it contains.
