NFSA Official Opening: introduction

1984

On 3 October 1984, Prime Minister the Hon Bob Hawke officially opened the NFSA’s new headquarters in Canberra. This short clip sets the scene for the opening ceremony, with invited guests in formal dress ascending the NFSA's front steps behind CTC 7 TV reporter Anne Maria Nicholson. 'There will be fewer formalities and more entertainment', she promises of the evening, which featured comedian Max Gillies, actor Kate Fitzpatrick and Australian Opera soprano Jennifer McGregor among the presenters and performers. Besides being a snapshot of 1980s hair, makeup and fashion, the clip captures the significance of the event – the inauguration of Australia's national audiovisual culture institution.
