Kath Duncan is a double amputee, born with neither a left arm or leg. She has pursued a successful career as an author and radio presenter, as well as being an active proponent for disabled rights. But due to strict societal beauty standards and experiences of discrimination, Duncan has struggled with her body image.
This clip from the documentary My One-Legged Dream Lover sees Duncan venturing into the niche community of amputee fetishists ('Devotees'). Her visit to fellow amputee Carol Davis, who produces erotic photographic and video content for Devotees, encapsulates Duncan's investment and discomfort with the subject. A fashion shoot of the lingerie-clad models and Duncan's candid interviews with them reveal a conflicted borderland – where Duncan's unfamiliarity with the world is contrasted with the models' matter-of-fact attitude towards desire. Intimate asides from Duncan further unpack questions of self-esteem and whether fetish can be an avenue to transcend oppressive social standards.
The significance of this conversation to Duncan’s philosophical journey becomes apparent when she later returns to the studio to be photographed in a variety of seductive costumes.
