While Australian technology company Fairlight was mainly known for developing the groundbreaking Computer Musical Instrument (CMI), which changed the sound of pop music in the 1980s, they also developed a video synthesiser to enable effects to be easily added to videos.

In this demonstration video for the CVI (Computer Video Instrument) Plus model, we are shown around by one of the synth’s strange creations, 'Arnold'. The demonstrated video effects in the clip – including mirror effects, psychedelic colorisation, picture freeze and live paintbox – came to define the MTV music video aesthetic of the late 1980s.
