1960 | DCP | USA | D: Billy Wilder

C.C. “Bud” Baxter (Jack Lemmon) is a lonely New York insurance clerk who lends his apartment to his company’s executives in the hope it will help him climb the corporate ladder.

The executives end up using his Upper West Side apartment for their extramarital affairs and Bud’s neighbours become convinced that he is the playboy. When Bud falls for an elevator operator caught in the same system, Fran (Shirley MacLaine), comedy gives way to moral reckoning.

Using wit and emotional precision, The Apartment blends romance with sharp social satire. It reveals the human cost of success and conformity. The film won numerous awards for its stars, as well as for its writer and director Billy Wilder.

‘A masterpiece of balance — cynical and tender at the same time.’ - Pauline Kael, The New Yorker
