Kookaburra Room
A quiet, characterful room for reading, study, and a moment of calm.

Tucked inside the National Film and Sound Archive, the Kookaburra Room is a calm, welcoming space for reading, study and informal discovery. With large windows and a quiet atmosphere, it’s well-suited to focused work, browsing material, or taking a pause between galleries.
Recently renovated in collaboration with Australian designer Mel Page, the room draws on the heritage of the Acton site. Original 1930s furniture and richly patterned floor coverings give the space its distinctive feel, with the kookaburra appearing as a playful design motif throughout.
Selected objects from the national collection are displayed around the room, alongside small interactive elements inspired by the NFSA's building and holdings.
The Kookaburra Room is open daily and free to enjoy. It can also be booked for meetings and small events.
