1969 | DCP | UK | D: Ken Loach

A neglected schoolboy (Billy) forms an unlikely bond with a Kestrel named Kes. Billy lives in a poor South Yorkshire community dominated by the local coal mining industry, but through his relationship with Kes he discovers renewed purpose and tenderness beyond the constraints of his life. The friendship reveals all that is missing from Billy’s life: affection, pride, freedom and respect.

Kes tells its story with care and compassion, showing the world of a child while capturing social realities. The film was a word-of-mouth hit for director Ken Loach, and the film’s enduring power lies in its quiet insistence on dignity amid hardship.

‘One of the most moving films ever made about childhood.’ - Philip French, The Observer
