Australian Oscar winner Ken Muggleston

Meet the Oliver! Oscar winner

Australian set decorator Ken Muggleston recalls the moment he first learned he'd won an Academy Award.

Our curated collection Australian Films at the Oscars highlights excerpts from local films that made it big in Hollywood. But these films are only half of the Australian Oscar success story. Many Australian actors, directors, artists and craftspeople have been Oscar-nominated for their work in Hollywood films.

The only categories in which Australians are yet to win are Documentary Short, Original Score and International Film (though, to be fair, the first and so far only Australian film ever nominated for International Film was Tanna at the 89th Oscars).

The most successful Australian at the Oscars to date is Catherine Martin, who's won four Oscars for Moulin Rouge! (2001) and The Great Gatsby (2013), two each for Costume Design and Production Design.

'How wonderful - I wish I'd been there'

Over 30 years before Catherine Martin's first Production Design Oscar, Australian Ken Muggleston won the Art Direction award for his set decoration on the musical Oliver! (which also won Best Picture). He tells interviewer Adam Bowen how he heard the news in this excerpt from his NFSA Oral History:

Former set designer Ken Muggleston reflects on winning an Academy Award in a clip from his oral history interview with Adam Bowen.

Muggleston was working as set decorator on Waterloo (1970), starring Rod Steiger and Christopher Plummer, when he was notified about his Oscar win. He still has a Napoleonic flag from the film (pictured above).
