Licensing for distribution

NFSA collection material, including the Film Australia collection, is available for licensing and distribution.

Distribution partners

The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) works with several partner distributors to make access to our collection easy and affordable.

These include:

  • Kanopy: if you're a member of a public library, or your educational institution has a Kanopy account, you can stream selected titles from our collection for free
  • ClickView: if you're a teacher you can access many NFSA titles through the ClickView educational portal. Titles have supporting notes and are captioned for accessibility.
  • DocPlay: [content to come]

Potential distribution partners

We’re always interested in hearing from potential partners.

If you would like to distribute NFSA material on your platform, email sales@nfsa.gov.au.

Film Australia collection

The Film Australia collection (FAC) is one of Australia's most important cultural assets.

It captures nearly a century of Australian life, spanning from 1913 to 2008.

It includes over 5,000 documentary and docu-drama titles produced by government film agencies.

Film Australia

The mission of Film Australia and its predecessors was to create a lasting visual record of Australian life.

Over the years, Film Australia became one of the nation’s leading producers of television documentaries and educational programs.

It shaped the careers of some of Australia’s most renowned filmmakers including Fred Schepisi, Gillian Armstrong and Peter Weir.

The collection continues to support factual producers and creators to produce new content.

Access to the collection

In 2011 the Film Australia Library collection, including copyright, was officially transferred from Screen Australia to the NFSA under the Screen Australia (Transfer of Assets) Act 2011.

We own, preserve and provide access to the FAC. We also provide licensing, sales and distribution information.

As well as licensing titles in their entirety, NFSA also licenses clips for use in various projects, including advertising and documentaries.
