The Australian Government funds the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) to:
- collect and preserve Australian audiovisual and related artefacts
- to make these available for different purposes.
We make collection materials available across many channels including this website, YouTube, and other commonly used platforms.
Fees for Enterprises team services
Fees apply to any request that requires the services of our Enterprises team. These services include:
- providing researcher access to collection materials at NFSA Access Centres
- supplying digital copies of collection material in both preview and master formats
- providing collection materials under licence agreements and usage agreements
- organising conservation treatment and technical examination of collection materials
- loaning film prints and digital cinema packages (DCPs)
- loaning original documents and artefacts
- loaning original audiovisual components.
Request a quote
Every service request is treated on a case-by-case basis depending on the collection and item. To request a quote:
- if you know the specific collection items you wish to access, use the NFSA catalogue
- if you need assistance or for general enquiries, use the Enterprise Enquiry Form.
The Enterprise team provide a realistic assessment of the work, costs and timeframes involved to service your request.
We provide itemised quotes for all work and generally require payment before we begin.
Reason for fees
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia Act 2008 enables us to charge fees for activities done in performing our functions.
Income generated from the fees helps us to:
- recover the costs of providing industry services
- continue sharing the collection in the national interest through our public programs and online initiatives.
Fees for materials in the public domain
Preserving, storing and digitising the national audiovisual collection for future generations is a key priority for the NFSA.
Material in the Public Domain is no longer subject to the Copyright Act 1968.
As the NFSA produces and supplies high-quality copies of these items under a NFSA Usage Agreement, charging fees helps us recover costs for labour and materials.
Fee structure
The fees we charge are based on a combination of factors including:
- the volume and format of collection materials requested
- the amount of staff time involved to service the request
- whether items need conservation, preservation or technical treatment
- copyright status and ownership of the materials
- proposed use of the materials
- urgency of the request.
The Enterprises team rate card is approved by the NFSA Executive and reviewed periodically.
Our pricing structure aligns with industry expectations.
Our rates are tiered and include discounts for:
- bulk use of material by commercial clients
- non-commercial use.
Application of fees:
- Research and handling fees apply to all requests.
- Digitisation and supply fees apply to all requests where a copy is supplied.
- Loan fees apply to all requests where material is made available for loan.
- Technical fees apply to all requests where conservation treatment or technical assessment is required to make the required collection materials available.
- Freight charges apply where physical items are despatched to clients.
Zero Fee Licence program
We also support eligible individuals and organisations to access archival footage, sound and images from the collection at a reduced cost.
Eligible use includes documentary productions and other creative projects.
Not all collection materials are available under the Zero Fee Licence (ZFL) program. Requests that don't meet the criteria for the ZFL program are serviced as standard requests and incur standard fees.
