1930s

The 1930s in Australia brought economic hardship, yetwere also defined by resilience and civic pride. This collection shows the contrasts – from newsreels of the Sydney Harbour Bridge opening to home movies of daily life. The political landscape was shaped by Menzies’ rise and his wartime speeches, while popular heroes offered comfort and escape. Don Bradman’s cricketing feats and Phar Lap’s legendary wins were emblems of hope during difficult years. Against the backdrop of the Depression, Australians chased spectacle, sporting thrills and the warm glow of patriotism – proof that spirits could rise even as fortunes fell.
