The original Warlords game box for the Amiga, created by Australian designer Steve Fawkner and developed by SSG. It was one of the early notable entries in the turn-based strategy genre. Fawkner’s fantasy-based war game was inspired by his Dungeons & Dragons campaign, which carries through to the medieval fantasy world artwork and packaging. On the box, a knight in chainmail brandishes a sword outside a castle, while the game’s setting of Illuria is illustrated by a fantasy map that wouldn’t be out of place in an edition of The Lord of the Rings.
The game was SSG’s first major success, selling over 50,000 copies and contributing to Australia’s international reputation in video game development. Warlords was an influential fantasy strategy game that spawned three sequels, a physical card game, and a spin-off series, Warlords: Battlecry.
