Filmmaker Toby Zoates describes his film Virgin Beasts (1991) as an 'iconoclastic half-animated musical'. The surreal science-fiction burlesque combines live action and animation to tell a story about an aging arms dealer and a gang of surfers in post-apocalyptic Sydney. This poster advertised the live premiere of the film at Jellyheads, Chippendale, on 26 December 1992 with guest bands Half and the Nerve.
The largely black-and-white poster features the Virgin Mary holding a baby surrounded by monsters and animals. It evokes the low-budget, DIY, irreverent punk tone of the underground film. Splashes of hand-coloured green and red cheekily reflect the film’s Boxing Day screening, referenced also in the tagline ‘Unwrap your troubles at a pagan Christmas!’.
