Australia’s top commercial radio music announcers from each of the six states accept their awards for Most Popular DJ at the televised ceremony of the King Of Pop - 1977 TV Week Australian Popular Music Awards, broadcast by the Nine Network live from the National Theatre, St Kilda on 7 October 1977.
The Most Popular Radio DJ Award was introduced in 1975 and remained in the awards categories for 6 years, during which time 3XY presenter Greg Evans won the Victorian entry each year. In a decidedly all-male affair, exemplifying the gender imbalance towards male voices on commercial radio that had persisted for many decades, the following received their awards. Collecting (in order) are Kevin Hillier (4IP - Queensland), Peter Kay (7HT - Tasmania), David Day (5KA – South Australia), Lionel Yorke (6PM – Western Australia), Alan Steele (2SM – New South Wales), and Greg Evans (3XY – Melbourne). Perhaps indicative of radio’s secondary status to the juggernaut of the recently introduced colour television, we witness the awkward spectacle of each winner being presented with their awards while remaining in their audience seats.
