This 1991 Telecom Australia advertisement features a white man and an Indigenous ranger stranded in the outback as rainfall approaches. When the white man assumes the ranger can communicate telepathically “because of his native heritage,” the ranger humorously rejects the idea and instead suggests using a mobile phone to call for help. Produced at a moment when mobile phones were still a novelty, the ad reflects both the emerging fascination with new technology and the persistence of racially coded tropes. By subverting the “magical native” stereotype, the Indigenous character highlights both the absurdity of the assumption and the practicality of modern communication.
