Taffy is a whimsical animated short by surrealist filmmaker Dušan Marek (1926–1993), offering an inventive reinterpretation of the 18th‑century nursery rhyme Taffy was a Welshman. Marek’s use of paper cut‑out stop‑motion creates a deliberately stylised world in which the two quarrelling characters feel both playful and unsettling. The film is narrated in a Welsh accent, which undermines the original text’s anti-Welsh sentiment.
As part of a broader series of nursery rhyme adaptations Marek produced between 1958 and 1960, Taffy highlights his experimental approach at a time when opportunities in Australian filmmaking were limited. Taffy reflects many of Marek's characteristic strengths: a distinctive visual language, meticulous stop‑motion technique, and a willingness to engage critically with traditional stories.
Marek fled Communist Czechoslovakia in 1948 and later settled in Australia with his brother and fellow artist, Voitre. Dušan produced more than 50 films between 1952 and 1975, mostly shot on 16mm Kodachrome or 16mm B&W reversal film. As well as paper cut-outs like Taffy, he made stop-motion animations with wooden puppets and plasticine models, demonstrating both his resourcefulness and a restless artistic curiosity.
