Beloved British-Irish comedian Spike Milligan features in a memorable guest spot on Australian sketch comedy series Ratbags. Known for creating one of the most acclaimed British comedies of all time, The Goon Show, this clip is a wonderful showcase of Milligan's trademark humour that majorly influenced icons like the Monty Python troupe and the Beatles.

Milligan became a regular visitor to Australia after his parents retired to Woy Woy on the NSW Central Coast. In this TV appearance, he engages in his characteristic wordplay, quick-fire banter and talent at playing whimsical characters. From an opening preamble that pokes good-natured fun at the series' title to the extended sketch in which Milligan dons a cork hat and a broad Aussie accent, the footage demonstrates his culturally specific, surreal style. Ratbags’ lively format is also evident as Milligan engages directly with the live audience, who respond uproariously to his quips about Australian pop culture and the current Fraser government.

Ratbags was a short-lived Network Ten series that aired in 1981, starring Mary Kenneally, Rod Quantock, John Derum, Joanne Samuel and others. Unique and madcap, it featured topical comedy and musical performances.
