In this extended report from WIN Television in Wollongong, Prince Charles and Princess Diana are seen attending the opening of the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (IPAC) on 30 January 1988, day six of their Australian tour.

Prince Charles had last visited Wollongong in 1977 and told the cheering crowd of well-wishers that he was delighted to be back.

On the same day, Princess Diana opened the Adelaide Youth Festival and gave her only speech of the 1988 Australian tour.

IPAC is a regional performing arts facility operated by Merrigong Theatre Company and owned by the City of Wollongong.

This clip also features Frank Arkell, who was then Lord Mayor of Wollongong. After he had left politics, Arkell was murdered in 1998 while under police investigation for child sex offences.
