Before Tinder and reality TV shows like The Bachelor and Married at First Sight, there was the sensationally popular '80s TV dating game show Perfect Match (1984–89). The show was such a success that it spawned this spin-off board game. Board games like Perfect Match Game served to promote the TV show and give fans a chance to recreate their favourite programs at home. The box's tagline promised: ‘Best of luck and of course – I hope you find your Perfect Match, Greg Evans’.

Greg Evans was the first host of Perfect Match alongside Debbie Newsome and both appeared on the box, with Dexter the robot mathematical genius. The Perfect Match formula that led to ratings success was simple: a catchy theme song ('Like an oyster and a pearl, And a guy and a girl, What have you got? You got a Perfect Match!'), a match-making robot named Dexter, and a healthy dose of saucy innuendo. The combination of ingredients got people watching, even if the outcome for the contestants wasn't always true love.
