Oh, the ’90s!

In 1996, Melissa George was riding a wave of fame after playing the beloved character Angel on Home and Away. One of her first acts after leaving the show was to make a 90-minute video aimed at teens, Mind, Body and Soul. Understandably, it was low on production values (this was 1996, after all), and the producers were looking to spice up the talking-head format of George’s beauty tips with some arty elements.

Given George’s star calibre, the tone of the show is refreshingly low-key – she’s still closer to Summer Bay than Hollywood. She and her model chat in a flatly lit suburban kitchen while raiding the fridge and fruit bowl for their concoctions. It’s an early instance of today’s influencer-driven wellness culture, but there are no brands being pushed, no glamorous lifestyle to envy: just a girl, her mate, a blender – and a clown.
