The voice heard in this brief recording belonged to Emil Voigt, founder of radio station 2KY.
By identifying the two boxers (Teddy Lawler and Taffy Jones), and comparing Voigt’s description with contemporary press reports, it was possible to determine when this aired – and whether it was the oldest surviving radio broadcast in Australia.
In fact, it was recorded on 1 November 1932 and broadcast mere hours after the 🚨 Invalid link 🚨 1932 Melbourne Cup, which remains the earliest known surviving Australian live radio broadcast. Truly, a photo finish!
