Gliding, spinning and hopping across the ice in sharp 1920s attire is no easy feat. In this home movie from 1928, viewers can glimpse the ice skating culture of the Swiss town of St. Moritz, along with Australian figure skater Charles Maclurcan's virtuoso moves.
Ice Skating at St. Moritz was filmed by the Brisbane-born Maclurcan during a visit to Europe that included attending the Winter Olympic Games in the iconic alpine town. The footage shows St. Moritz's beautiful mountain scenery in the background as Maclurcan expertly showcases his skating skills and energetic style. Casual skaters can also be spotted milling around, reflecting the sport's recreational popularity.
Maclurcan founded the Figure Skating Club of New South Wales in 1915 and served as the first President of the reorganised National Ice Skating Association of Australia. He was instrumental in raising national skating standards through exhibitions, teaching and judging. His lifelong dedication to the sport was matched by his wide-ranging career as an engineer, hotel proprietor, broadcaster and early radio enthusiast, making him a significant figure in both Australian skating and media history.
The accompanying music was composed by Andrew Ryan, a student at the Australian National University, as part of a silent home movie scoring project undertaken by the NFSA and the ANU School of Music in 2023.
