After a difficult search, a group of roommates have finally found their latest flatmate. There’s a catch: the meat-eating new girl is joining a household of outspoken vegans who endeavour to go ‘waste-free’.

This reality TV clip explores the challenges and compromises of living in a share-house, an increasingly common arrangement for young Australians. Solo interviews with the occupants, shot in their real bedrooms, create a sense of casual intimacy. Subtle insecurities exist alongside scenes of the group cooking and lounging together in their shared space, illuminating both the tensions and rewards of making a home together.

Produced by Rob Innes, Housemates is an Australian reality show that aired on ABC2 from 2016–17. Aimed at exploring unique living situations, this excerpt embodies the subtleties of household harmony.
