The first episode of travel program The Great Outdoors screened on Australian television in 1993. In the opening credits, we skim through some of Australia's recognisable and signature landscapes alongside travellers on a train, a canoe, a snowmobile and a windsurfer.

The debut stories included a visit to Wilson’s Promontory in Victoria, the exploration of some outback mysteries in Lake Mungo, a fishing segment with Rex Hunt, a look at the hoarding habits of the bowerbird, and a skydiving segment, with actor Ernie Dingo taking the plunge.

As the series grew in popularity, the locations expanded to match – viewers were soon treated to exotic and exciting places not only within Australia, but around the world. For kids growing up in the 1990s and early 2000s, presenters such as Shelley Craft, Andrew Daddo, Jennifer Hawkins, Tom Williams and Laura Csortan held some of the most coveted jobs in television.

The Great Outdoors ran for over 15 years on the Seven Network, until 2007. A return in 2012 was short-lived, but the show resurfaced in 2024, proving itself one of Australian TV’s great stayers.
